Tricare® Begins (1994)

In peace and war, the Department of Defense provides healthcare services to about 1.5 million active-duty military personnel and 7 million military-related beneficiaries.

In response to military downsizing, medical cost escalation and budgetary constraints, the DOD established the Tricare® managed-care program to ensure quality, consistent care; preserve choice of healthcare providers for beneficiaries; improve access to care; and contain healthcare costs.

When military medical personnel are deployed, Tricare® provides care from established civilian provider networks and negotiates to expand the networks if necessary.
