Hospital Apprentice Robert Stanley portraitOn July 12, 1900, while attached to the protected cruiser U.S.S. Newark, Hospital Apprentice Robert Stanley and his unit were sent to Peking, China, to relieve the Allied forces during the Boxer rebellion. He volunteered to carry messages between the American and British legations, bravely defying heavy enemy fire. Chinese snipers were everywhere, and the boxer militants fought viciously. Besides Robert Henry Stanley, 23 other men received the Medal of Honor for their distinguished conduct during the fierce battle at Peking.

Citation: “Hospital Apprentice Stanley's exceptional fortitude, inspiring initiative, and unrelenting devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.”
