Pvt. Oscar Burkard portraitPvt. Oscar Burkard participated in one of the first battles of the Indian Wars and was the last person during the campaign to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Burkard earned the medal for his actions at the Battle of Sugar Point, the war’s final battle, where he was acting hospital steward with the Hospital Corps. During the battle, he rescued several soldiers while under heavy fire, and fearlessly continued to do so throughout the day against the uprising Chippewa Indians.

Citation: “For distinguished bravery in action against hostile Indians.”
