After entering the service in California, 36-year-old George Shiels performed a heroic and fearless deed at Tuliahan River in the Philippine Islands on March 25, 1899. A surgeon in the Army, he personally saved the life of a comrade while under heavy fire during the Philippine-American War.

Citation:

“Voluntarily exposed himself to the fire of the enemy and went with four men to the relief of two native Filipinos lying wounded about 150 yards in front of the lines and personally carried one of them to a place of safety.”
