During his training, Hospital Corpsman Third Class Wayne Caron was the Honorman of his company “on the basis of his high initiative, leadership ability, immaculate appearance, pride in the Navy…and because he displayed a high personal example to his shipmates.” After training he received orders to serve with the 1st Marine division in Vietnam.
On July 28, 1968, Caron accompanied his platoon on a sweep through an open rice paddy. As Caron’s platoon crossed the rice paddy, the enemy fired from camouflaged positions in the trees. As Caron moved to the aid of his wounded comrades, enemy fire hit him in the arm, knocking him to the ground. He reached an injured man who was suffering from a severe chest wound. Caron’s medical treatment saved his life. He then ran toward a second stricken Marine and was again hit by enemy fire, this time in the leg. Unable to walk, he crawled to the downed man and managed to treat him. As he tried to reach yet another Marine, Caron was struck in the back near the spine. Although in great pain he continued to crawl to the aid of a third man until he was killed by an enemy rocket.
