Military Health System

Surveillance Time Periods

The Medical Surveillance Monthly Report (MSMR) publishes retrospective analyses of health-related surveillance data about the U.S. military members and associated populations. In general, reports featured in the MSMR are primarily based on summaries of medical administrative data that are routinely provided to AFHSD and integrated into the Defense Medical Surveillance System for health surveillance purposes. Although the datasets used within some reports or studies are not from the previous or current year, they are considered timely by scientific publication standards and provide actionable public health information or recommendations for the health of the force.

In addition, external submissions (surveillance updates, reports or studies) for publication in the MSMR may include data that are service-specific or derive from other data sources that do not reflect data from the previous or current year.

Lastly, some analyses may be specifically designed to evaluate a question which does not require data from the previous or current year. For example, an analysis may create a cohort which is followed over a specific time frame; analyses of this type may use data that is not from the current or previous year.
