Vision and Hearing Loss Prevention – Stay Sight and Sound Ready

This June, the Military Health System (MHS) recognizes June as “Vision and Hearing Loss Prevention Month” to raise awareness about hearing and vision as vital components of military readiness, and remind service members to stay sight and sound ready. We will also encourage members of the military community to analyze their own vision and hearing health, and inspire them to get tested and take action if they think there might be a problem.

PTSD Awareness

June 27 is National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Day. The MHS is taking the opportunity to raise awareness in the military community about PTSD symptoms and effects, as well as advance the discussion about diagnosis, treatment, and care for those suffering from the effects of trauma, and inspire them to seek effective treatment.

Men’s Health

June is Men’s Health Month, a national observance used to raise awareness about health care for men and focus on encouraging boys, men, and their families to practice and implement healthy living decisions, such as exercising and eating healthy. This month the MHS will focus on the importance of recognizing preventable health problems and encouraging early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys in the DOD community.

LGBTQ Pride Month

The DHA recognizes the work of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans in establishing a free nation that values diversity, a vital component of a free nation. The fight against discrimination and the promotion of diversity and inclusion are critical components of our national defense. Many LGBTQ Americans have proudly fought to uphold these values at home and abroad, playing a major role in the fight to obtain equality for all.

Extreme heat happens in the summer when temperatures are much hotter and/or humid than average, which means it varies by location. Exposure to extreme heat, particularly coupled with high levels of physical exertion and insufficient hydration, can cause serious health issues, and even death. Service members should learn to identify the risks of extreme heat and the symptoms of heat-related illness. Heat acclimatization is necessary to prevent or reduce the severity of heat illness.
