Military families experience lots of change. Many of these changes count as QLEs for TRICARE.
QLEs provide a unique opportunity for beneficiaries to make enrollment changes. With TRICARE Prime, including the US Family Health Plan (USFHP), and TRICARE Select, the only other time beneficiaries can make enrollment changes is during the annual TRICARE Open Season.
A QLE for one family member creates a chance for all eligible family members to change their TRICARE health plan during a 90-day eligibility window. A QLE may also mean a beneficiary is no longer eligible for a TRICARE health plan.
Some QLEs may mean beneficiaries become newly eligible for certain premium-based health plans (TRICARE Reserve Select, TRICARE Retired Reserve, TRICARE Young Adult, and the Continued Health Care Benefit Program). Enrollment in premium-based health plans can take place at any time throughout the year.

Retiring from the National Guard and Reserve isn’t itself a QLE. However, turning age 60 after having retired from the National Guard and Reserve is a QLE. Retired Reserve members have different TRICARE options available before and after age 60. To learn more about TRICARE QLEs, visit www.tricare.mil/lifeevents.
