Sergeant Russell L. Collier, an Army Medical Specialist, was killed on October 3, 2004, when, without thought for his own safety and carrying only his medic’s bag, he ran to the aid of Sergeant Christopher Potts, who had been hit by small arms fire in Taji, Iraq. Collier had carefully disarmed himself so that he could quickly render aid to the injured Soldier. While he advanced under direct enemy fire, he was killed. Col­lier served with the 1st Battalion, 206th Field Artillery Regiment, 39th Infantry Brigade, Arkansas National Guard, out of Russellville, Arkansas, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was buried with military honors on October 12, 2004, at the Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.
