The Defense Health Agency (DHA) welcomed Dr. Michael Malanoski as its new Deputy Director May 9.

Malanoski joins the DHA from the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED), the headquarters command for Navy medicine, where he served as Executive Director since 2015.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the DHA team. I’ve watched over the past year and truly been impressed with what DHA has accomplished,” he said after he was sworn in by DHA Director Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Ron Place. Malanoski also delivered a video welcome message.

A 1981 graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine, Malanoski began his active duty career in Navy medicine at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He has served in multiple leadership assignments including as Deputy Commander at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda and Commanding Officer of Naval Support Center Bethesda.

Following his retirement from active duty in 2011, Malanoski continued his service to Navy medicine with BUMED, where he was intimately involved with the implementation of the Military Health System (MHS) Governance changes which resulted in the establishment of the DHA.

In 2014, he was detailed for nine months to serve as lead action officer for the Secretary of Defense-directed MHS review, a landmark study on MHS performance in the areas of patient safety, quality, and access.

The DHA is a joint combat support agency enabling the Army, Navy, and Air Force medical services to provide a medically ready force and ready medical force to combatant commands in peacetime and wartime.

The DHA manages more than 700 medical and dental facilities worldwide and directs the TRICARE Health Program, which provides worldwide medical, dental and pharmacy services to more than 9.6 million uniformed service members, retirees and their families. It also oversees military medical enterprise services such as health information technology, medical logistics, research and development, education and training, public health, facility management, and budget and resource management.

Malanoski assumes his new duties from the DHA’s acting deputy director, Army Maj. Gen. George “Ned” Appenzeller.
